Scaling analysis of coral reef systems: an approach to problems of scale   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Dimensional analysis and scaling are related, semi-formal procedures for capturing the essential process(es) controlling the behaviour of a complex system, and for describing the functional relationships between them. The techniques involve the parameterization of natural processes, the identification of the temporal and spatial scales of variation of processes, and the evaluation of potential interactions between processes referenced to those scales using non-dimensional (scaled) parameters. Scaling approaches are increasingly being applied to a broad range of marine ecological problems, with the aims of assessing the relative importance of physical and biological parameters in controlling variation in process rates, and placing limits on the ability of one process to affect another. The value of the approach to coral reef research lies in the conceptualization of relationships between discipline-specific processes, and the evaluation of scale-dependent processes across the large range of spatial and temporal scales which pertain to coral reefs. Characteristic scales of physical, geological and biological processes exhibit different patterns of distribution along the temporal dimension. Scaling arguments based on examples from reef systems indicate that a large group of biological and biogeochemical processes are strongly influenced by hydrodynamic processe occuring at similar time scales within the range from about on hour to one year. We argue that scaling approaches to process-related problems are pre-requisite to interdisciplinary research on coral reefs.  相似文献

Measurement of chemically induced DNA repair as unscheduled DNA synthesis in rodent liver following in vivo treatment is a useful screen for potential hepatocarcinogens. In addition to measurement of unscheduled DNA synthesis, examination of S-phase synthesis provides an indicator of chemically induced cell proliferation in the liver, which may be a basis for hepatic tumor promotion. Several chemicals and classes of chemicals have been examined using these endpoints. The pyrrolizidine alkaloid riddelline is a potent genotoxic agent in vitro, and in vivo studies confirm this response as riddelline induces significant elevations in unscheduled DNA synthesis and S-phase synthesis in rat liver. Conversely, H. C. Blue dyes #1 and #2 are both potent genotoxic agents in vitro but fail to express this genotoxicity in vivo. H. C Blue #1 induces significant increases in S-phase synthesis in B6C3F1 mouse liver, which correlates with the observed carcinogenicity of this compound. Halogenated hydrocarbons likewise fail to induce unscheduled DNA synthesis in vivo, but many of these compounds do increase hepatic cell proliferation in mice, which may be the principal mechanism of hepatocarcinogenesis in this species.Abbreviations BCMEE bis(2-chloro-l-methylethyl)ether - dThd thymidine - HCB1 H.C. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on neurons are part of a gene family that includes nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on skeletal muscles and neuronal alpha bungarotoxin-binding proteins that in many species, unlike receptors, do not have an acetylcholine-regulated cation channel. This gene superfamily of ligand-gated receptors also includes receptors for glycine and gamma-aminobutyric acid. Rapid progress on neuronal nicotinic receptors has recently been possible using monoclonal antibodies as probes for receptor proteins and cDNAs as probes for receptor genes. These studies are the primary focus of this review, although other aspects of these receptors are also considered. In birds and mammals, there are subtypes of neuronal nicotinic receptors. All of these receptors differ from nicotinic receptors of muscle pharmacologically (none bind alpha bungarotoxin, and some have very high affinity for nicotine), structurally (having only two types of subunits rather than four), and, in some cases, in functional role (some are located presynaptically). However, there are amino acid sequence homologies between the subunits of these receptors that suggest the location of important functional domains. Sequence homologies also suggest that the subunits of the proteins of this family all evolved from a common ancestral protein subunit. The ligand-gated ion channel characteristic of this superfamily is formed from multiple copies of homologous subunits. Conserved domains responsible for strong stereospecific association of the subunits are probably a fundamental organizing principle of the superfamily. Whereas the structure of muscle-type nicotinic receptors appears to have been established by the time of elasmobranchs and has evolved quite conservatively since then, the evolution of neuronal-type nicotinic receptors appears to be in more rapid flux. Certainly, the studies of these receptors are in rapid flux, with the availability of monoclonal antibody probes for localizing, purifying, and characterizing the proteins, and cDNA probes for determining sequences, localizing mRNAs, expressing functional receptors, and studying genetic regulation. The role of nicotinic receptors in neuromuscular transmission is well understood, but the role of nicotinic receptors in brain function is not. The current deluge of data using antibodies and cDNAs is beginning to come together nicely to describe the structure of these receptors. Soon, these techniques may combine with others to better reveal the functional roles of neuronal nicotinic receptors.  相似文献

Agricultural development projects in the fertile and most well-watered areas of arid and semiarid Africa usually deny access to nomadic pastoralists whose production system and livelihood depend upon such areas in the dry season and during frequent droughts. The result can be degradation of range resources through overgrazing, and greater vulnerability of pastoralists. Recent calls for compatible land use schemes or nonexclusionary agricultural development projects in the context of pastoralist transhumance, suggest allowing pastoralists structured access to project sites in the dry season in order to utilize forage and water supplies. This paper examines the capacity of an irrigation scheme to support the seasonal influx of transhumant livestock in dry seasons of varying severity. The livestock carrying capacity of the existing mosaic of land use patterns and practices is used in the determination of the proportional areas of land use needed to absorb large seasonal concentrations of livestock.  相似文献

Summary The flowering and fruiting patterns of the dioecious perennial herb Rubus chamaemorus L. were studied in frost-prone (open) and frost-sheltered (Shaded) habitats in northern Sweden over 6 years. The number of ramets with flower buds, the proportion of flower buds that opened, and fruit set varied markedly between years. In the frost-prone populations, the occurrence or absence of detrimental frosts during the development of flowers and fruit could explain much of the variation, both in the proportion of flower buds that developed into flowers, and in fruit set. In the frost-sheltered populations, most female flowers that did not develop into fruit aborted without any signs of physical damage and before any ovules had begun to enlarge. Flower mortality caused by herbivores feeding on reproductive parts was commonly low, but reached values higher than 10% in one of the shaded populations. Hand-pollination increased the proportion of ovules producing seeds in the mature fruits by about 20%, and in one year also increased fruit set significantly in one population. Fruit-producing female ramets had a higher mortality and a lower probability of flowering in the subsequent year than male ramets and non-fruiting female ramets. In R. chamaemorus, the conditions for fruit maturation are highly unpredictable at the time of flower initiation. It is suggested that the apparent over-initiation of flower buds is advantageous, as it allows the plant to attain a high reproductive success in years favourable for flowering and fruit development.  相似文献

When acutely transferred to diluted seawater (SW), Procephalothrix spiralis and Clitellio arenarius regulate water content (g H2O/g solute free dry wt = s.f.d.w.) via loss of Na and Cl (µmoles/g.s.f.d.w.). The present study extends these observations to a greater range of salinities and determines the effects of long-term, stepwise acclimation to diluted seawaters. Final exposure to a given experimental seawater (70, 50, 30, 15%) was 48 hours. Osmolality (mOsm/kg H2O) and Na, K, and Cl ion concentrations (mEq/l) were determined in total tissue water and in the extracellular fluid of C. arenarius. Extracellular volume was determined as the 14C-polyethylene glycol space. Both species behaved as hyperosmotic conformers in diluted seawaters. However, reduction of the osmotic gradient between worm and medium occurred in P. spiralis, but not C. arenarius, in 30 and 15% SW. In both species, osmolality and Na, Cl, and K concentrations in total tissue water decreased with increased dilution of the SW. Water content increased with dilution of the medium but was lower than that which would be predicted based on approximation of the van't Hoff relation. This indicated the occurrence of regulatory volume decrease (RVD). In P. spiralis, in 70 or 50% SW, RVD was accompanied by loss of Na and Cl contents. However, in 30 or 15% SW, Na and Cl contents increased and in worms in 15% SW K content decreased. The latter movements of Na, Cl and K are indicative of cellular hysteresis and were associated with decreased viability, indicating the lower limits of regulatory ability in this species. In comparison, RVD in C. arenarius occurred in all diluted seawaters and was accompanied by loss of Na and Cl contents. In C. arenarius, evidence for reduced viability was absent. Removal of the supra- and subesophageal ganglia of C. arenarius resulted in retention of water, Na and Cl (g H2O or µmoles/g s.f.d.w.) in worms acclimated to 70% SW. Removal of the cerebral ganglia and cephalic glands of P. spiralis did not significantly influence regulation of water content.  相似文献

Bacterial production and amino acid metabolism in aquatic systems can be estimated by simultaneous incubation of water samples with both tritiated methyl-thymidine and 14C-labeled amino acids. This dual-label method not only saves time, labor, and materials, but also allows determination of these two parameters in the same microbial subcommunity. Both organic carbon incorporation and respiration can be estimated. The results obtained with the dual-label technique are not significantly different from single-radiolabel methods over a wide range of bacterial activity. The method is particularly suitable for large-scale field programs and has been used successfully with eutrophic estuarine samples as well as with oligotrophic oceanic water. In the mesohaline portion of Chesapeake Bay, thymidine incorporation ranged seasonally from 2 to 635 pmol liter−1 h−1 and amino acid turnover rates ranged from 0.01 to 28.4% h−1. Comparison of thymidine incorporation with amino acid turnover measurements made at a deep, midbay station in 1985 suggested a close coupling between bacterial production and amino acid metabolism during most of the year. However, production-specific amino acid turnover rates increased dramatically in deep bay waters during the spring phytoplankton bloom, indicating transient decoupling of bacterial production from metabolism. Ecological features such as this are readily detectable with the dual-label method.  相似文献

Acidic fibroblast growth factor is a potent mitogen for a variety of cells in culture, including vascular endothelial cells, and is angiogenic in vivo. The complete amino acid sequence of human brain-derived acidic fibroblast growth factor has been determined from amino terminal sequence analysis and carboxypeptidase A digestion of the whole protein and sequence analyses of peptides generated by tryptic, Staphylococcus aureus V8 protease and cyanogen bromide cleavages. A potential Asn-Gly-Ser glycosylation sequence is present in the human protein. The complete amino acid sequence is compared to that of the equivalent protein purified from bovine brain.  相似文献

Human endothelial cells release components into the growth medium that stimulate cell-substratum adhesion. Several macromolecular components were isolated by ultracentrifugation of the endothelial cell conditioned medium. The components were heterogeneous, consisting of several sizes when examined by sedimentation velocity and gel filtration. When the extracellular components were evaluated by electron microscopy, structurally discrete particles were observed. The extracellular components and the complexes mediated cell-substratum adhesion to both human umbilical and arterial endothelial cells. The majority of the extracellular components that promote endothelial cell adhesion were pelleted by ultracentrifugation. Although the complexes contained fibronectin, antibodies to fibronectin did not inhibit cell adhesion to the complexes. Significant inhibition of endothelial cell adhesion was observed in the presence of heparin and heparan sulfate. The supernatant fraction following ultracentrifugation of the growth medium contained a component that suppressed endothelial cell adhesion to culture dishes coated with fibronectin, type I collagen, and endothelial cell complexes. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicated that the complexes contained several components, and the majority of the large-molecular-weight components were pelleted by ultracentrifugation. The conditioned medium from human endothelial cells contains specific complexes that promote cell-substratum adhesion and components that suppress cell-substratum adhesion.  相似文献
